These are NOT generic photos - you're looking at the actual rock you will
receive when ordering! And all orders are mailed out within one business day,
cost included!
As Woody is pointing out in Photo #2, this primarily red / reddish-brown rock
is roughly 7" across its longest axis and stands 6½" tall. You'll see a number
of cracks, crevices, and depressions, along with lots of pockmarks in a variety
of shapes and sizes. Also known as "scoria" or "cinder", it was hand-picked
directly from the Springerville Volcanic Field, near the White Mountains of
east-central Arizona.
Those pockmarks are one of the most recognizable features of scoria. When
these rocks were expelled from the volcanoes that were active here between
300,000-1.5 million years ago, hot gases were captured within the molten rock.
As it cooled, the gas was trapped, leaving thousands of tiny "pores" within the
rock itself. The red color resulted from its iron oxidizing during eruption.
This rock would be perfect for:
In aquariums. Set it out a bit from a corner to create a safe space for
smaller fish, or combine it with other rocks to create an underground scene.
Scoria lava rocks are extremely lightweight and reduce the risk of damaging
your tanks. They offer additional benefits ensuring the health of your
aquarium, too. IMPORTANT: This rock is shipped in a natural state and needs to
be prepared before introducing it into your aquarium.
Lava rocks can create a beautiful setting in your terrarium or bonsai tree
arrangements. Juxtapose this rock to larger plants to create a visual offset,
for example. (Please see our other listings if you’re looking for something in
a different size or shape. Each listing is unique.)
Lava rocks are an ideal base for planting small succulents. Its pores offer
natural benefits that help certain varieties of succulents to even thrive
compared to other planting methods. They allow air to pass to their shallow
roots, while retaining moisture as water easily drains. Their native roughness
offers a place for plants to grab hold and take root, too.
At Arizona Lava Rocks, we don't take you for granite! Each of our rocks are
individually gathered. This one was picked off the ground because something
about it caught our eye. Again, this listing is for the specific rock you see
in the accompanying photos. Our inventory is constantly changing - please check
out our other listings.
