These Super Rare, Gold, American Optical sunglasses are virtually identical to
the American Optical, nickel, AN 6531 Aviator sunglasses that were produced
under military specifications for Army and Navy pilots during World War 2. The
construction, size, shape, and detailing of these gold sunglasses is exactly
like that on the nickel plated AN 6531 sunglasses. Even the fine detailing on
the temple arms, near the hinges, is identical to that found on the nickel
AN6531 sunglasses.
The only difference between the gold pair and the nickel plated pairs is that
the gold pair has a beautiful marveled sweat bar, marveled nose pads and a
marbled covering over the ear wraps. Also, the brow bar is stamped “AO” on the
gold sunglasses and the decoration on the front of the frame hinge has a
slightly different, fancier design on it.
The extremely rare, gold American Optical sunglasses are in very nice vintage
condition. There are some scratches, dings, flea bites, and a few small bits of
corrosion on the frame but they are only visible under very close inspection
and strong lighting. The lenses are in good condition with only very light
scratches and flea bites that do not affect vision. The nose pads and sweat bar
are in good condition. The marbled covering on the ear wraps is covered with
shrink wrap tubing to protect the delicate marbling on the ear wraps. The
glasses are very comfortable to wear and the shrink wrapped, delicate marbled
wraps should last indefinitely.
