It uses 800 grains of black powder per firing. The powder goes into a hole in the back of the canon. The apparatus you see in the last picture is spring loaded and retracts. You can use a 10 to 20 ft pull string (not included with sale of cannon) to attached it to the pin so you are not standing near the canon when it fires.
