Water Hyacinth is a very popular, prolific, and durable floating plant with
exceptional denitrification and water clarifying qualities for both ponds and
aquariums. Very useful in helping to keep water clean.
Water Hyacinth (Eichoria crassipes) is a floating plant that produces
beautiful lavender flowers. It is much larger than many other floating plants
and therefore an excellent option for providing shade and cover for more
reclusive species and fry.
Its leaves are substantial and will float at the water's surface, which can
also be very useful for small semi-aquatic animals in larger terrariums.
Water hyacinth is easy to maintain. It simply needs to have its underside damp
because it is a floating plant, thus planting in the substrate is not
necessary. It multiplies incredibly quickl in ponds but more slowly in
aquariums. It needs bright lighting, and in ponds, full sun is ideal. Water
hyacinth may quickly take over an aquarium or pond while it's in full bloom,
therefore some plants will need to be pulled out as they grow to avoid
obstructing light and gas exchange. It should not be placed in the filter
outflow stream because it needs very little movement and reasonably motionless
water. Usually, it cannot withstand extreme cold or overwinter.
Due to its potential to become an invasive plant, this plant must never be
introduced to US native waterways.
